Sa Kapistahan ng Mahal na Birheng Maria ng Lourdes, Feb 11, 2013, sa oras natin, February 12, 2013 sa oras ng Europa ay ipinahayag ng Sto. Papa ang kanyang pag iiwan sa kanyang tungkulin bilang pinuno ng sambayanang Kristiyano na may bilang na 1.2 bilyong katoliko sa boung mundo.

Siya ay unag Papang umalis sa kanyang tungkulin mula noong Middle ages, 700 dang taon na ang nakakalipas. Bagamat hindi ito ang tinaguriang kaugalian ng simbahan kahit na mahina at may sakit ang Papa, ito ay nakasaad sa Canon Law sa pagbibitiw ng mga tungkulin ng mga Klero.Sa mga Klero kasama na rin dito ang mga Obispo. Ang papa ay nabibilang rin sa mga hanay ng Obispo bilang Obispo ng Diyosesis ng Roma bagamat siya ang pinakamataas sa lahat. Walang specific na nakalagay sa papa tungkol sa pagbibitiw ng tungkulin ngunit ang mga obispo ay hinihinging magpadala ng sulat ng pagbibitiw pag abot nila ng edad na 75.

Sa kanyang edad na 85 ay ibinigay niyang kadahilanan sa kanyang pagbibitiw ay ang kanyang edad. Nakikita niyang ang kanyang pagbibitiw ay makabubuti pasa sa Simbahan Katoliko at sa mga miyembro nito.

Siya ay mananatili sa isang kumbento na itinatag ng dating Papa Juan Pablo II sa loob ng Vatican.

Ang Papa Benedicto XVI ay nakatalaga na magbibitiw sa ika 28 ng Pebrero ng kasalukuyang taon. Pag dumating na ang panahon na ito ay magpapatawang ng isang malawang pagpupulong para sa mga kabilang sa College of Cardinals.

Sa dalawang libong taong kasaysayan ng Simbahang Katolika si papa Celestino V ay nagbitiw ng kanyang tungkulin noong 1294 at si Papa Gregorio XII upang matapos ang paghahati Simbahan noong 1415.

Siguradong kasama ko sa panalangin ang sambayanang kristiyano sa magiging bagong pinuno ng Simbahang Katoliko.
