Golden Vestment

Image
As the feast of the beheading of Saint John the Baptist is approaching, the parish of Saint John the Baptist in Liliw, Laguna showcases the Golden Vestment of Pope John Paul II when he visited the Philippines during the World Youth Day 1995. As we remember the martyrdom of the precursor of our Lord Jesus Christ, werare reminded of holy people like saint Pope John Paul II who in their way have shown great love to the Christ, the Son of the living God. As you visit the parish Church in Liliw, Laguna especially on the occasion of its feast day try to be emulated in following Jesus as you gaze on the vestment of Pope John Paull II. The said relic according to Rev. Fr. Marci Dijan, the parish priest will stay there until August 30, it will be returned afterwards to the Archdiocese of Manila where it is kept for safekeeping.  it is unfortunate that I cannot catch this opportunity as this coming week is our annual retreat in Baguio.  Pictures courtesy of Nancy Casao ...

Catholic devotees gather for the holy mass Picture: FRANCIS R. MALASIG For years, the only known way of celebrating the feast of Saint John the Baptist aside from Novena and celebration of the Holy Eucharist is the dousing of water symbolizing the baptizing act of the saints to the faithful. I believe every catholic in the Philippines is aware of this. However, first time to see the "taong putik" which literally means mud people in Bibiclat in Aliaga, Nueva Ecija in the northern part of Luzon. The event, which has been observed in the Biblicat village since 1945, sees hundreds of devotees participating to seek blessings and bountiful harvests. The mud people are covered with mud and dress in dried banana leaves representing Saint John the Baptist. Picture: JAY DIRECTO Saint John the Baptist is the elder cousin of our Lord Jesus Christ, the son of Elizabeth and Zachary whom Jesus mother Mary visited before he was born. John was the name Elizabeth and Zachary...

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 5:1-11.

Image
Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 5:1-11. One day, as Jesus stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, with a crowd gathered around him listening to the word of God, he caught sight of two boats left at the water’s edge by the fishermen now washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to pull out a little from the shore. There he sat and continued to teach the crowd. When he had finished speaking he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Simon replied, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing. But if you say so, I will lower the nets.” This they did and caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. They signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats almost to the point of sinking. Upon seeing this, Simon Peter fell at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Leave me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” For he and his companions wer...

How can we attain eternal life?

An exegetical reflection on the Gospel of the Fourth Sunday of Lent B (John 3:14-21) March 18, 2012 By Msgr. Lope C. Robredillo, SThD WHEN a ship wanders off course in a stormy night, what gives life and hope to its passengers and crew is the lighthouse that beacons. If one is lost in the forest, he gains hope when he finds a footpath, and there is hope for him as long as he follows it. When one walks the boulevard at night, he is assured of safety as long as he does so along the lighted path. The more he wanders from it, the greater the danger of losing his life. In these instances, the image of the lighthouse, the footpath and the lighted path describes an opportunity which one must not miss or neglect if he is to be saved, if he is not to perish. In today’s Gospel, which is really a part of the dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus that turns to a monologue, John stresses a similar point. The image he uses for this purpose alludes to an event in the Old Testament in which a b...
