On Construction

On Construction After the morning Mass, I spoke to one regular donor concerning the undergoing construction of the multi-purpose hall. I explained to her that I want to finish it before my term lapse. The bishop has announced that on January 2007 there will be a general reshuffle. However, I do not want to haste the process without proper consultations. The second floor of the said building is not yet finished. I acknowledge her generosity in trying to finish the building which according to his welder will only require P250,000.00 for steel trusses . However, the architect whom the parish commissioned believes otherwise. According to the architect, it will require at around P 740,000.00 for the steel trusses with corrugated roof and P820,000.00 for the cement slab. The parish has P150,000.00 only on its hand. I am requiring her to submit the plan for the P250,000.00 which she believes is enough. She felt that I am not listening to her even though she could cash out another P100,000.00....

"He Taught with Authority"

Homily Mk 1: 22 “He taught with authority” Proclaiming the Good News of salvation is one of the most important and urgent task that we have to fulfill as Jesus Christ himself have told us to do. However, in today’s society where a lot of people are proclaiming the good news of salvation which sometimes holds opposite views, others are left in confusion and darkness. On the other hand, there are people who are complaining that they are teaching what they believe are true were unheeded, what’s the problem? The Lord is teaching us the example that we have to teach with authority unlike that of the way the scribes and Pharisees do. There are two things I would like to share. First, The first reading from the book of Deuteronomy 18:15-20 that the Lord will send prophets as his spokesperson as a reaction to the request of the Israelites that they don’t want the Lord to talk to them as in the burning bush or in the face of Moises who are filled with heavenly life, They felt that they will die...

Prex Seminar

Prex Seminar There are about ten faithful who are supposed to go for confession as part of their preparation for the confirmation which is a requirement before marriage. However, there is some misunderstanding between my secretary and secretary of the parish where the confirmation should take place. So, it was reschedule for the next Sunday. The three day prex seminar concluded today with 34 candidates who finished it. 18 male and 16 female. I am hoping that they will be a great transformation in their lives as well as in their cooperation to the programs of the parishes. We need more workers in the vineyard of the Lord.

Barrio Masses

Barrio Masses One of regular schedule is barangay masses during Saturday afternoon as an anticipated mass. I have 17 more upland villages. At least, I am trying to attend to them once a month. Today’s schedule is Calangay, Tungkod and Cambuja. I asked Fr. Frederick of the Servants of the Poor to attend the Mass in tungkod. Cambuja and Calangay are both thirty minutes from poblacion. Extraordinary ministers of the Holy Communion attend the Bible service with communion in Calangay in other weeks. Though they are 30 minutes away from the poblacion, the problem lies on transportation and road. There are unpaved roads in between those areas and the fare is beyond the means of some faithful.

Deus Caritas Est

Deus Caritas Est Bob declined the subject of the latest instruction of the Vatiacan for the formation of seminarians concerning this month's article for one of the Catholic Website. I understand his position. It is one of the most controversial instructions of the Vatican that generate a lot of reaction from the far left and far right sides within the Catholic circles. So, I decided to submit the latest Encyclical "Deus caritas est" instead which he immediately approved. This is the first encyclical of Pope Benedict VI which will guide the Church on his perspective in the governance of the Catholic Church as her Pontiff. I am now making the schemata of the said encyclical as the basis of my article. I hope to finished the said article as a commentary of the said encyclical before the end of this month.

Brownouts/Blackouts

Brownouts Brownouts is a common phenomena in this part of the country. During my first months here, it has greatly affected me, because I was not used to it. This is Philippines, we are encountering occasional brownouts, but, here it is a pain in the butt. From time to time, the power is randomly cut off. Some residents suspected that this is the way power company works here to generate more income. I will not state what electric company is serving us. I do not want to go to court for litigation. Now, I realized that there is nothing I can do about it. Patience is the only thing that comes to my mind. The parish have an “antique” power generator, but it is under repair. It usually bog down. I would like to buy a new one but the parish have no money to purchase one. Lord, Give me the serenity to accept things I cannot change.

Volunteerism

Image
Volunteerism Life is full of opportunities and the internet has enhanced it one way or another. Surfing the internet, one day, I encountered websites that are looking for volunteers. I applied to one of them, www.masstimes.org . Bob, the person who replied to my application told me that for ten years of website’s existence, I am the first priest who volunteered for the position. Well, generally, it is not the primary preoccupation of priests. However, personally, I would like to extend my knowledge beyond my parish work without physically leaving it. (Leaving my parish will surely require a lot of time and resources. I am now assigned to a far-flung area of the province of Laguna, Philippines. A two (2) hour drive is needed to reach the nearest city). I am quite excited in volunteering because it could be one of my barometers on knowing what really my other talents are and how could I relate and respond to the global world. As a parish priest, especially here in the Philippines, nobody...

Victory of Filipino Spirit

Pacquiao's Victory, Victory of Filipino Spirit A day after Manny Pacquiao non title bout over Morales of Mexico, the hype continues. The Jubilation continous. The Filipino people celebrates his victory. His victory becomes our victory. Ever since the fight was schedules, most Filipinos are excited to see the fight and confident that this time Manny will win. During the fight, aside from the regular tv feed, some movie houses open one of their cinemas for the screening of the fight live for 300 pesos. Some cockpit arena do the same for 200 pesos. There are municipalities who installed a wide screen in town plaza for public viewing, free of charge. For me, what is important is the inspiration that Manny has given should be the potent force to steer not only the athletes but the whole Filipino people to strive more to attain a sense of confidence upwards to alleviate the present economic, political and spiritual situation of the country.

Canonical Interview

Canonical Interview Canonical interview for couple who wishes to be married is part of my second and fourth Sunday of the month schedule. Though Sunday is a hectic day for a priest it is also the reasonable day for couples who are free on Sundays and working during weekdays. There are five couples scheduled today. Some of them are already living together as husbands and wives. When asked why they preferred to live together before the ceremony of marriage. They responded that they were not prepared then financially. It is a matter of fact that financial reason is part and partial of marriage preparation. However the psychological, spiritual and moral aspects should not be overshadowed on the process. This is just one of the indications that the church specifically the parish should keep an eye on and offer remedies. One of my fellow parish priest once commented on the issue that his experience is worse than mine. Simply, because, though on my experience, marriage is quite late as expect...

National Bible Sunday 2006

Image
Homily on the National Bible Week 2006 Every Sunday after the celebration of Sto. Niňo, we celebrates the national Bible Week. God is inviting us to read, reflect, put into action and share the Word of God. God speaks to us in many ways but we must appreciate also the written one – the Sacred Scriptures. Proclaiming The Good News of salvation is an unending story. Since creation, God constantly proclaim himself in our midst which come into fulfillment in our Lord Jesus Christ. There are two things, I would like to share. First, there is a need to intensify our effort to know the Sacred Scriptures. Ussually, I include in the farewell message to the married couples during weddings that they might find the proper guidance in their life by constantly reading, hearing and reflecting the written Word of God. In the beginning of psalms clearly speaks that anyone who follow the law of the Lord –the Bible – is like a tree planted near the streams who is constanly nourished and bear ...

An Emergency

An Emergency My plan this afternoon is to attend two birthdays, one in Calamba and the other in Biňan, both in Laguna. I was hoping to visit them and greet them but not all plan goes as expected. After lunch, one of my church workers approach asking me if they could borrow my FX van. It is an emergency. I was confused because I was hoping to leave also that afternoon but the problem is of great important than my iterinary, so I agreed to lent my mode of transportation and cancel my appointments. I telephoned them that I could not come to their birthday celebrations. God’s way is so strange! Since, I already asked my fellow priest of the neighboring town to substitute me for afternoon’s mass but I could not leave. I decided to spend an afternoon nap instead. At least, it gives me some rest.

Marriage Turned To Funeral

Marriage Turned To Funeral After the wedding, Bro Ver Untalan went to me to ask a question. But, before he could speak, I reminded him of the responsibility as the chair couple of PREX. That they should attend the Novena mass and prayer in preparation for the PREX seminar. I told him also that they should make other activities between the seminar date. I ask him then of his question, he asked me if I already heard the sad news. What news? I asked back. The groom to be who is scheduled to be married this coming 26th of this month was been murdered yesterday afternoon. Nine days before the marriage date, the atmosphere of celebration has turned to mourning and tragedy. No, I did not heard about it because of my hectic schedule yesterday. Information started coming in after the conversation. But the reason he came is that the bride to be came to him asking if they could still be married even the groom is dead. This thing happens in TV dramas and comedies not in real life. I told him that...

Missionary Catechist of the Sacred Heart Of Jesus Sisters

Missionary Catechists of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Sisters After the 5:30 mass, I went to the convent of the Missionary Catechists of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Sisters. The congregation is the only religious community in my parish. Their main apostolate is the administration of the only Catholic school in the vicariate. I celebrate Mass with them every third Tuesday of the month. They celebrate the Mass daily with the lay faithful. On every third Tuesday, I spend some moments with them to converse with them and to discuss matters that we might collaborate with in the religious activities of the parish and to exchange ideas and views especially in matters of faith. To enliven one’s vocation and to inspire one another and offer suggestion on problems one might encountered. They are only three in this community, namely; Sr. Bernadette G. Abary from Famy, Laguna, Sr. Josefina J. Valencia of Lipa Batangas and Sr Rosemarie F. Siena of Buenavista Marinduque.

PREX

PREX Usually, celebration of the Mass on Tuesday is on the morning. Today we celebrated the Holy Eucharist in the afternoon, 5:30, because in preparation for the prex seminar to be hold on January 27-29. But, the sad news is that I did not see any prex members during the Mass. It was moved for their favor but no one to claim the prize. I am restraining myself not to be angry.

Happy Birthday Happy!

Happy Birthday Happy! I was informed by my secretary that the programmer I hired is celebrating her birthday today. She is now 24 of age. Her name is Edessa Corona nicknamed Happy. A graduate of computer programming in AMA Sta. Cruz. Married and had a Son. For almost two years, she programmed the Parish Registry Program and the Parish Finance Program. Parish Registry Program is a digital counterpart of the Parish Registry Books which contains the baptismal, confirmation, marriage and death records of the parishioners. There are also some programs develop by other programmers but I am not satisfied. There are also foreign one but they are not suited to Philippine usage. Mine is practically the digital counterpart of the books. This is also tantamount to a digital copy of the original. The Parish Finance Program is still undergoing some polishing but it is almost finished. It is a program that contains the financial status of the parish. We decided to have a little snacks this afternoon ...

Pulong Mindanao

Pulong Mindanao At around 8:30 am, we embarked to one of the sitio of Barangay Tungkod. We traveled for 30 minutes in a rough road by the car and started to walk in a stony path passing through seven rivers for almost half an hour to reach the chapel of Pulong Mindanao. The sitio is on the boundary of Sta. Maria Laguna and Tanay Rizal. It has a population of 80 voters. It has two classroms for grade level that houses all the elementary classes. Families who could afford to pay for their children to go for high school education go to Tanay for schooling. Conversing with the people, they told me that they opted for their children to send their children to Tanay instead for Sta. Maria because they need not to traverse the rivers which sometimes too deep to cross with. There is only one river but the path going to the town proper requires them to cross it seven times, There are no existing bridges not even a wooden one or made of bamboo. It is not surprising that many of the populace have ...

Bills of Materials

Image
Bills of Materials After the Morning mass, I asked Michael de Guzman, the parish architect, to draw me the plan and bills of materials for the Roof of the multi-purpose hall. We are undergoing construction of the multi purpose hall which started more than a year ago and still unfinished. We rely on the generosity of the faithful to finished this project. Personally, there are two reasons for the said project. There is a need for the place for meetings, seminars and other functions. Second to bring up and enliven the Christian the spirit of the people that we could aim for higher things for the good of the community and of the parish. The parish is one of the oldest parishes of the diocese. We have only 27,000 population though we have celebrated 402 years of Christianity. It has the biggest land area of any existing municipality of the province of Laguna. The church was destroyed in the 1970's by strong typhoon. It was hurriedly built to conform the modern standard almost wiping al...

Feast of Sto. Niňo. 3rd Sunday of January 2006. Homily. Humility and Defense. Today, we celebrate the Feast of Sto. Niňo. The image of the Sto. Niňo is one of the common images in every Filipino Catholic household. Here in my parish, the celebration is headed by Hermano and Hermana, aided by the Knights of Columbus. This year’s Hermano and ...
