How do we know that Jesus of Nazareth was God come to save us? There is no more important teaching of the Christian faith that Jesus of Nazareth was the Son of God. In our Creed, which goes back to the 5th century, fifteen hundred years ago, we say every Sunday at Mass that Jesus was “God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one being with the Father”. We are all children of God in the sense that God made us, and even more that he loved us and made us his children by adoption in our baptism. But Catholics, along with all orthodox Christians, believe that Jesus was the natural not the adopted Son of God, sharing fully in the being of his Father. How do we know this?
