For the Philippines as of 2025 — CBCP / Vatican Yearbook data:

How many active priests?

∼10,178 priests active nationwide — down from 12,964 in 2016.

The CBCP reports the Catholic population grew from 61.6M in 2016 to 73.6M in 2025, while 

priests declined from 12,964 to 10,178. 


Other reports note about 1 priest per 7,000 parishioners shortage and older counts of 8,700 priests nationwide overworked. 


For reference, Catholic-Hierarchy latest tabulation lists 7,335 total (5,037 diocesan + 2,298 religious) but that is pre-2025. The CBCP 10,178 figure is the newest.

How many are Filipinos vs. foreign?


CBCP does not publish a Filipino / foreign split. What we know:

  • ∼85-90% are Filipinos — all diocesan priests (around 6,000-7,000) are Filipino, plus majority of religious priests.
  • ∼10-15% are foreign missionaries — estimated 1,000-1,500 active foreign priests helping fill the gap.


Why the rise of foreign? The shortage is so normalized that dioceses now regularly invite missionaries from religious orders to preside over Eucharist. 


Who are they?

  • SVD, CICM, OMI, Salesians, Claretians

  • notes Church turning to them amid shortage
  • Also Indonesian, Vietnamese, Korean, African, European — e.g. recent SVD ordination in PH: 5 Filipinos, 2 Indonesians, 1 from Madagascar

So in practice: If you see a priest in a parish in Cavite, Laguna, or Metro Manila today, 9 out of 10 are Filipino. The 1 foreign is almost always a religious missionary priest, not diocesan.

Where I am serving now in San Pablo City

  • 91 parishes, 150 priests, around 3 million Catholics 
  • Wikipedia current count: Secular priests 220 (145 diocesan, 75 religious)
  • Older UCA News: 124 diocesan priests
  • Ratio: 1 priest : ∼20,000 Catholics (3M / 150). If count all 220: 1 : 13,636.

Holy Study (Banal na Pagaaral)

Some people came to me for courtesy concerning their group and their activities. They have been here before for sometime before i came as their parish priest but has stopped coming here and moved to a new venue. They call themselves as "Banal na Pag-aaral", Holy Study. I do not know if that is the right translation in English for the said group. They are asking to be recognized as another group of the parish seeking holiness through the study of the Bible and through the eucharistic devotion. So, since the more, the merrier.
