Hugas Labas, Hugas Loob?
Gospel: Luke 11:37-41
While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee invited Him to dine. Jesus went in and reclined at table. The Pharisee was amazed to see He did not wash before dinner. The Lord said to him, "You Pharisees clean the outside of cup and dish, but inside you are filled with greed and wickedness. You fools! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also? Give what is inside as alms, and everything will be clean for you."
HOMILY: Hugas Labas, Hugas Loob?
1. The Invitation — and the Inspection
The Pharisee invites Jesus, but not to listen — to inspect. Parang may bisita ka, pero tinitignan lang kung naghugas ka ng kamay.
The Pharisee was shocked Jesus didn't wash. In Greek, ebaptisthe — ritual washing up to the elbow, not hygiene. It was about being clean before God.
Many of us are like that Pharisee in church. We check: Nakaluhod ba? Naka-veil ba? Naka-barong ba si
Father? We are experts at outside. Jesus goes straight to the point: You clean the outside of cup, but inside is harpage — greed, plunder. Outside shiny, inside bulok.
God is not impressed by your Instagram faith. He looks at the cup's inside.
2. Fools! — The Strongest Word Jesus Uses for Religious People
"Mga hangal!" — You fools!
Why so strong? Because the Pharisee thought cleanliness is about water outside. Jesus says cleanliness is about mercy inside. Did not He who made the outside make the inside also? The same God who made your hands made your heart. You cannot say "I love God" with clean hands and have dirty heart full of greed, inggit, judgment
.
In Tagalog: Hugas labas, dumi loob. What makes dirty inside? Jesus names it: greed — wanting more, never sharing. That's why He says the cure...
3. The Cure — Give Alms, and Everything Becomes Clean
"Ibigay ninyo bilang limos ang nasa loob, at malinis na ang lahat."
This is shocking. Jesus doesn't say "wash better inside." He says: Give what is inside away. Greed is cured by generosity. Wickedness is cured by alms. Alms in Aramaic is zidqah — righteousness. To give alms is not charity extra — it is justice. What you have inside that cup — excess, time, money, forgiveness — give it.
If your heart is full of judgment, give understanding.
If your cup is full of money, give to poor.
If your house is clean but your speech is dirty — give kind words.
Then, says Jesus, everything will be clean. Not just hands. Everything.
The Pharisee asked: "Nag-hugas ka ba ng kamay?"
Jesus asks: "Nag-hugas ka ba ng puso?"
The outside is for people to see.
The inside is for God to see.
But people are thirsty from the inside of your cup, not the outside. Ang tunay na malinis, hindi yung mukhang malinis — kundi yung marunong magbigay.
Amen.
