Are you Afraid?

Lucas 12, 1-7 — First day after the "Woes." Jesus now turns from Pharisees to His disciples. Private coaching after public confrontation.

Gospel: Luke 12:1-7

Meanwhile a crowd of many thousands gathered... Jesus began to speak first to His disciples: "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Nothing is covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you whispered in private rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops. I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body and after that can do no more. I will show you whom to fear: fear Him who after killing has power to cast into Gehenna. Yes, I tell you, fear Him. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, you are of more value than many sparrows."

HOMILY: Three Fears, One Freedom

Yesterday Jesus said "Woe to you Pharisees." Today He says "My friends" — philoi mou — first time in Luke Jesus calls disciples friends. After confronting enemies, He comforts friends. The context: thousands pressing, but Jesus whispers to His few.

Three teachings today about fear.

1. "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy" — The Fear of Being Exposed

Leaven — small, hidden, but makes whole dough rise. Hypocrisy is same. Small compromise in secret — white lie, small corruption, hidden chat — but it ferments whole life.

Jesus says: Nothing covered that will not be revealed. In Greek, apokalupto — apocalypse. Everything hidden will have apocalypse.

We live in age of screenshots. What you whisper in inner room (tameion — storeroom, secret room) will be shouted from housetops. In Jesus' time, housetop was where you proclaim news. Today, housetop is Facebook.

Hypocrisy is exhausting. You need to remember what lie you told to whom. Integrity is restful. One life only.

Ang taong totoo, hindi pagod. Ang taong plastic, laging puyat sa kakaisip ng palusot.

Ask your parish: What leaven are you hiding in dough of your life that you think no one sees?

2. "Do not fear those who kill the body" — The Fear of People

Verse 4 is shocking: "My friends, do not fear those who kill the body."

Jesus just said Pharisees are hunting Him (11:53-54). Now He says: Don't fear them. They can kill body but not soul.

Who do we fear today? We fear marites, we fear boss who can fire us, we fear politician who can sue us, we fear troll army. We adjust truth because we fear people.

Jesus says: That fear is misplaced. People can kill reputation, career, body — but they cannot throw you into Gehenna. Only God can judge ultimate destiny.

So whom should we fear? "Fear Him who has power to cast into Gehenna." This is not horror fear — phobos here is reverent awe, like child fears to disappoint loving father. Fear God, not man. If you fear God, you fear no one else.

Kung takot ka sa Diyos, hindi ka takot sa tao. Kung takot ka sa tao, hindi ka pa takot sa Diyos.

Look at martyrs: Pedro Calungsod, Lorenzo Ruiz — they feared God more than killers, so they became fearless.

3. "You are worth more than many sparrows" — The Fear of Being Forgotten

From fear, Jesus moves to tenderness — the most comforting lines in Gospel.

Five sparrows sold for two pennies (assarion) — cheapest meat of poor. Jews sold 4 for 2 pennies, seller throws in 5th for free because worthless. Yet not one is forgotten by God.

Then Jesus says: Even hairs of your head are numbered. Not counted — numbered. God knows you have 1,237 hairs today, 1,235 tomorrow.

Fr. Jessie, what is fear of many Filipinos today? Not just death — fear of being forgotten, worthless. "Wala akong kwenta." OFW fear: my family forgot me. Sick fear: God forgot me. Old person fear: no one visits me.

Jesus says: If God remembers freebie sparrow, how much more you? You are not statistic. You are not "isa lang." You are polloi strouthion diapherete — you differ, you are more valuable than many sparrows.

God doesn't just count you — He numbers your hairs. That is intimate attention.

So last line: "Fear not." Me phobesthe. Most repeated command in Bible — 365 times, one for each day.

Yesterday Jesus said "Woe to you." Today He says "Fear not, my friends."

The Pharisee lives in fear of being exposed, so he hides.
The disciple lives in fear of God, so he is exposed in truth — and set free.

Three fears to leave at altar today:

  1. Fear of exposure — surrender your secret leaven to confession.
  2. Fear of people — whom are you pleasing more than God?
  3. Fear of being forgotten — you are remembered. Your hairs are numbered.

Closing Line You Can Use:

Yesterday they built tombs for dead prophets. Today Jesus says: You, my friend, are worth more than many sparrows. God did not create you to be a tomb keeper. He created you to be His friend — remembered, numbered, and never forgotten.

Amen.

Lucas 12:1-7 | Takot ka ba? Takot sa tao? Takot mabuking? Takot makalimutan? Sabi ni Hesus: "My friends, fear not. Even your hairs are numbered. If God remembers the freebie sparrow, how much more you." #FearNot #FrJessie #DailyGospel
